And how plumbing that does not meet Plumbing Code can adversely affect your
Safety, Health and Welfare.
2. Put up billboards around the State of Texas that say, HireLicensedPlumbers.com - directing folks to this site.
We want to give folks all the information they need in order to answer the question for themselves;
"Why should I hire a licensed plumber?"
Let's take a look at when modern plumbing practices were relatively new and licensing was not regulated on a state level.
Although the first state legislation to regulate plumbing was passed in 1897,
The responsibility of administering standards was delegated to individual municipal governments. As a result, standards and licensing varied significantly depending on the city.
A plumber had to obtain a different license in every city that he worked in.
While that might not seem like the most efficient idea, remember...
This is the time frame that indoor plumbing became standard in the typical home and we were learning lessons about the importance of proper installations... the hard way.
New London School Explosion
On March 18th, 1937, a great tragedy unfolded in the small East Texas town of New London. On that fateful day, a gas leak under a school building resulted in an explosion that shattered the quiet spring afternoon.
The School Board had decided to cancel their natural gas contract and tap into a "residual gas line" in an effort to save money. What was the result of this decision?
Tragically, hundreds of children and teachers lost their lives in a single event in one day.
The gas piping had been installed by a janitor and a bus driver...
A radiator salesman inspected the work.
While plumbing licenses did not become mandatory on a state level until 1947, which led to the formation of the TEXAS STATE BOARD OF PLUMBING EXAMINERS, cities began taking plumbing more seriously immediately following the New London tragedy.
Behold:
Master Plumbing License #1 issued by the city of Houston on January 1, 1938.
